The Murray Darling Basin Regional Economic Diversification Program is a $32.5 million allocation of funding from the Australian Government

The Murray Darling Basin Regional Economic Diversification Program is a $32.5 million allocation of funding from the Australian Government to assist economic development projects that support the economic base of New South Wales regional communities that are most likely to be affected by the implementation of the Murray Darling Basin Plan.

Eligible applicants include local councils, NSW Government agencies, businesses and not-for-profit organisations.

Eligible projects need to be sustainable and increase the economic output of local and regional economies and involve, where possible, the development of sustainable partnerships with government, the private sector or the not-for-profit community to support joint investment in regional communities.

Each application for assistance will be assessed with regard to the program criteria, and the project's potential to diversify and broaden the economic base of communities likely to be impacted by the implementation of the Murray Darling Basin Plan.

All projects need to be completed and all funding claimed by 30 June 2017.

The NSW Government opened an initial round of funding in August 2014 and has already allocated $18.4 million to 22 NSW projects, from a diverse range of industries including manufacturing, aquaculture, cheese-making and grain processing. Many of these projects are already delivering outcomes that will help diversify economies and create new jobs in the Murray Darling Basin.

Round two consists of two streams:

  • Regional Business Investment Fund - a $10 million business investment program to support business investment and job creating projects in NSW's portion of the Murray Darling Basin.
  • Energise Enterprise - a $4.1 million grants program for capability building and economic development projects to support small businesses and communities in the Basin.

Applications for both programs will be via an online portal that will open in coming weeks.
