Christmas warning for farm visitors

Christmas warning for farm visitors

Racing around on motorbikes, riding horses, swimming in dams and generally getting dirty is a dusty dream-world for the many children visiting farms these summer holidays. But they’re not always as aware of potential dangers as those who live there, so it’s important to set some rules and boundaries to keep everyone safe.

Children under 15 years old make up about 20 per cent of the on-farm deaths in Australia each year, and nearly one-third of those children are visitors, according to the Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety (ACAHS).

Historically the biggest risk has been drowning, but quad bikes are an increasing issue, with two deaths involving children recorded in the first half of 2015.

Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR)

Newsletter

As Acting CEO, I am very pleased to share our 2014/15 Annual Review. You can read more below, but it was our biggest grant-making and partnerships year to date: we awarded a record $8.4m in grants, and received $9.5m in donations and grants to support a diverse range of projects across rural, regional and remote Australia.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donor partners and it was wonderful to be able to thank many of the donors at a small gathering in Sydney at historic Boomerang House, thanks to the generosity of Lindsay Fox. It was great to meet some more of our donors and I look forward to continuing the discussions we started. Considerable credit must also go to our former CEO Alexandra Gartmann, who has moved on into her new role as MD and CEO of Rural Bank. Alex was an inspiring leader - we thank her deeply for the four and a half years she gave to FRRR, and wish her all the very best for her future.

You only have one more week to apply for the Australian Government’s new Nanny Pilot Program.

Press Release

Meeting today with police officers at the North Sydney Police Station, the Minister for Education and Training, Senator Simon Birmingham, said the pilot would help families who struggle to access child care because of where they live or the hours they work.

“Standard child care hours don’t always fit the needs of parents who don’t work standard jobs, for example people who live in rural and remote areas, or those who work shifts, like police officers, hospitality workers, nurses and emergency services workers, ” Senator Birmingham said.

“The Australian Government’s innovative $246 million Nanny Pilot Programme gives families another choice in how they balance their family and work demands, and will help us determine how best to target taxpayer funding to support them.

“This is a great opportunity for parents who need flexible child care, such as a nanny, in order to work or get back to work and I encourage families to put in their applications by 30 October to avoid missing out.”

NBN Rollout

NBN Rollout

Press Release - Mark Coulton - 16 October, 2015

THE National Broadband Network (NBN) yesterday (October 16) released its full construction schedule for the next three years, providing Australians with the greatest detail yet on when the NBN will reach them.

The comprehensive construction plan to network 9.5 million premises nationwide will see more than 40,500 homes and businesses across the electorate of Parkes accessing super-fast broadband under an accelerated three-year roll-out.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton welcomed the plan, saying it demonstrates the Coalition Government’s commitment to rural and regional Australia in closing the digital divide.

“I am very proud to be part of a Government that is bringing cutting edge technology to the people of rural and regional Australia,” Mr Coulton said.

“The release of this accelerated roll-out plan means that most of my electorate is now on track to be rolled out by the end of 2017, bringing the entire NBN roll-out forward by quite a few years.
