Museum officially opened, Historic Bicycles Walk launched, and Helen Baldwin exhibition delights visitors

History, art and community spirit came together spectacularly on Friday night as the Burren Junction School of Arts Hall hosted one of the biggest community celebrations the town has seen in many years.

Visitors travelled from across north-west New South Wales to join residents for the official opening of the Burren Junction Museum, the launch of the Burren Junction Historic Bicycles Walk and a special exhibition of paintings by renowned Australian artist Helen Baldwin, alongside works by talented local and regional artists.

The evening marked the culmination of almost two years of planning, research and volunteer effort by members of the Burren Junction Progress Association and the wider community.

Official opening of the museum

Bill Moore officially opened the Burren Junction Museum, reflecting on the importance of preserving the stories, memorabilia and achievements that have shaped the town.

Bill, together with Philip and Elizabeth Powell, first suggested transforming the former smokers' room adjoining the historic School of Arts Hall into a museum where Burren Junction's rich history could be preserved and shared with future generations.

One of the highlights of Bill's address was his recollection of the Burren Junction Tennis Association, formed in 1936. Its annual tournament became famous throughout western New South Wales as the "Wimbledon of the West," attracting players and spectators from across the region.

Today, memorabilia from the Tennis Association sits proudly alongside displays from Burren Junction Public School, the Burren Junction RSL Sub-Branch, the CWA, local businesses, farming families and many other organisations and residents whose contributions helped build the community.

One of the museum's most treasured exhibits is the original Burren Junction manual telephone exchange. Sharon Shearer located the exchange at Gunnedah Museum and arranged for it to return home on extended loan. Fittingly, Sharon was Burren Junction's final manual telephone exchange operator before the town changed to automatic exchanges in 1989, making its return particularly special.

Historic Bicycles Walk officially launched

Friday night also marked the official launch of the Burren Junction Historic Bicycles Walk.

Like many great community projects, it began with a simple idea.

Sharon Shearer's sister, Trina, suggested placing brightly coloured bicycles around town. That idea evolved into an ambitious heritage project featuring 29 historic sites, each marked by a colourful bicycle, interpretive sign and QR code linking visitors to the history of that location.

Sharon restored and painted every bicycle, Sarokhan (Saro) Malla designed and produced the interpretive signs, while Kate Schwager researched the history of each site and developed the website and QR code content.

Historical information was gathered from many sources, with special acknowledgement to Judy Field (Visions of the Plains), Nita Radford (Grass and Dust) and Judith Cameron, whose generous assistance helped bring many of Burren Junction's stories to life.

The self-guided walk now allows visitors to discover Burren Junction's fascinating history—from the arrival of the railway and the growth of agriculture through to the famous artesian bore that placed the town on the tourist map.

Celebrating local art

Adding another dimension to the evening was a special exhibition of works by renowned Australian artist Helen Baldwin.

Visitors admired a collection of Helen's paintings and exquisite petit point, while also browsing and purchasing artwork from local and regional artists Gerde Vogel, Jesse Shorter, Georgie Guilfoyle, Deb Michelle Smith, Anna Hall, Rhonda Palmer, Annie Murray, Keiran Knight, Coral Marshall and Vicky Phelps.

The beautifully restored School of Arts Hall provided the perfect setting, with flowers, displays and lighting creating a warm and welcoming gallery atmosphere.

Guests also enjoyed live music, butter chicken noodle boxes, refreshments from the bar and plenty of opportunities to catch up with friends while exploring the museum and exhibitions.

A true community effort

Projects like these do not happen without the dedication of volunteers.

The Burren Junction Progress Association thanked Bill Moore, Philip and Elizabeth Powell, Trina, Sharon Shearer, Sarokhan (Saro) Malla, everyone who donated memorabilia and historical information, the exhibiting artists and the many volunteers who helped prepare the hall and cater for the evening.

Special thanks were extended to Lucinda Stump, Heidi Stump, Susie Marshall and Janine Powell, whose hard work decorating the hall, organising the bar and preparing the catering helped create such a memorable evening.

The Association also acknowledged the generous support of Walgett Shire Council, whose funding helped make both the museum and the Historic Bicycles Walk possible.

A proud night for Burren Junction

Friday night's celebration was much more than the opening of a museum and the launch of a heritage walk.

It was a celebration of Burren Junction's past, a recognition of the volunteers who continue to build its future and a reminder that even a small community can achieve remarkable things when people work together.

The Burren Junction Museum and Historic Bicycles Walk are now open for visitors, offering locals and travellers alike the opportunity to discover the stories that have shaped this remarkable little town.
